KGPT 26 TV proudly accepted the National Association of Broadcasters’ Low Power Television Award for Best Television History from the Advanced Television Broadcasting Alliance for our documentary The Bob Walterscheid Story. KGPT 26’s Tom Pappert traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to attend the NAB conference and accept the award on behalf of the station on Monday evening.
The Bob Walterscheid Story was produced by KGPT 26 to document the life and history of Bob Walterscheid. Walterscheid, who is now in his 80s, is one of the innovative minds who made television broadcasting what it is today. He is considered by many to be the first man in Kansas to conceive the modern 30 second commercial with video and a voice over. Walterscheid went on to produce the first commercials for Pizza Hut, including the famous “Put Put to the Pizza Hut” commercial, as well as Taco Tico and other well known franchises.
The TV special details Walterscheid’s life starting from his early years as the son of an unwed mother who was then adopted by a supportive family, to the time he spent at Wichita’s KAKE-TV and as the owner of his own production company and agency, to his life now as a retired businessman.
The special was produced by KGPT 26’s staff, including Tom Pappert as producer and director, Grant Sorensen as videographer, and Caleb Johnston as videographer and editor.
